ONA - Kinetic Seaweed Light
Exploring how light and mechanical movement can enhance and celebrate the natural properties of seaweed to bring oceanic beauty into our homes. Ona features two distinct modes: a contained "shy" phase that highlights seaweed textures, and an open "social" phase that transforms surrounding space with dynamic shadows and colors. Third place winner at Interplay24 kinetic lighting competition.

DESIGN CONCEPT
Ona has two stages: in its shy phase it closes up behind its protective shell, containing and restricting light to draw attention to the seaweed details.
When Ona feels safe and social, its shell opens up, exposing its light and illuminating surroundings with a dazzling array of shadows and colors. The focus shifts from the seaweed itself to transforming the entire environment.
Prototyping & Experimentation

1. Exploring and experimenting with raw seaweed
2. Designing the frame and mechanism in CAD
3. 3D printing a prototype to test the scale and functionality
4. Exploring methods to attach the seaweed to the frame panels
5. Assembling the seaweed panels onto the base
6. Testing the lighting effect on the completed shell prototype
7. Wiring the LEDs and stepper motor onto the frame
8. Programming the LED panels with an array of light patterns
9. Refining the movement of the motor to expand and contract the panels
